Israeli Director Amos Gitai Presents Film on West Bank Village at Venice Festival
A new film by Amos Gitai highlights the ongoing struggle of a Palestinian village facing demolition orders and international scrutiny.
Veteran filmmaker Amos Gitai has presented his latest project at the Venice film festival. The Road to Jericho focuses on conditions in the occupied West Bank. The film centers on Khan al-Ahmar, a Palestinian settlement located near Highway one between Jerusalem and Jericho.
The community operates a makeshift school built from tires, wood, and adobe. Around three hundred Bedouin children attend the facility. Israeli officials have refused to issue a building permit and declared the settlement illegal.
The school has faced demolition threats for eight years. Gitai describes the site as a test of international commitment to local rights. He notes that European responses have so far prevented the structure from being destroyed. The long term future of the village remains uncertain.
