On April 1 2024 an Israeli airstrike killed seven international aid workers from World Central Kitchen. The attack took place on the Mediterranean shore of Gaza. The Israeli military had previously assisted in planning the food delivery operation.
The Gaza conflict had already lasted six months when the incident occurred. Israeli authorities had closed all land crossings. This blockade created a severe famine risk across the territory.
Aid workers and local contractors built a temporary pier using sand and rubble. They also used building materials from a contractor's destroyed home. The structure allowed a cargo barge arriving from Cyprus to unload pallets of food.
The delivery process encountered immediate problems. The operation concluded with seven fatalities among the international staff.
